It's been so long since the last time I posted something not work-related on my blog, as always, I apologize for the unplanned hiatus. I promise to update this blog frequently to keep it current.

I also have been shooting and retouching a lot of photos recently, but nothing that I can share on my blog -- at least not yet.

Did this shoot for Zee Lifestyle's November issue. I know I am kind of late but you know what they say, better late than never.

It was such a challenging shoot since the look we were going for was sunny/warm vibe but it rained all day. I had to shoot the models inside a tent and me shooting under an umbrella. We definitely winged it on this shoot.

For weeks I have been lying in bed, getting enough rest and sleep. Thus, the lack of activity in my online accounts.

I have been suffering from flu and cough, unaware it was turning into Pneumonia. Good thing I went to the doctor, did tests and got the right meds before it turned into something more horrible.

Fortunately, I am feeling a little better now, but I still have to stick to my sleeping schedule and as much as possible not stress out so much. Because of this I had to decline several shoots because my body is just too sick and exhausted.

Coach Poppy Girls

If it's still not obvious to you guys, I am obsessed with flowers.

The shots above were taken while I was busy preparing for a different shoot.

A few weeks ago two lovely ladies invited me for a shoot. They joined the Coach Poppy Girls challenge on StyleBible.ph and they wanted me to shoot their entries. Congratulations girls for winning! :D

The girls made a cute set to go with their looks. All of the clothes are from W.A.G.W. and the head pieces were made before the shoot. It was a quick but fun shoot, we did it in less than an hour due to rain. But I hope you still like the images.

Another shoot I did with makeup artists Emi Ayag and Ginno Alducente. Taken a few weeks ago when Ginno was still in town. I am beginning to like late night shoots now. I think I am more alive at night the only problem is I can't sleep after the shoot. My body clock is starting to shift to a different time zone again. Sigh.

On a different note, finally moved in to the new place and we now have internet. I love the fact that it's eerily quiet yet it's just five minutes away to everything.

Eyes are starting to hurt from all the retouching I have been doing lately. Not to mention that my 'half dead' finger is starting to hurt again. Accepted the fact that I can no longer write properly, draw, use a pen for a long periods of time without pain, but I am still so thankful that I can still press the shutter button. Now, back to retouching~ How was your week?

One of my favorite shoots to date. I had so much fun on this shoot, I didn't notice we wrapped up around 1 AM. I was really happy that I got to work with a wonderful team. Flawless hair and makeup by Emi Ayag and wardrobe by amazing couture designer Cary Santiago and Wendell Quisido. Shot at Cary Santiago's Atelier.

I was also very delighted I got to work with super talented makeup artist Ginno Alducente who was the creative director for the shoot. I've been wanting to meet and work with Ginno for so long that when he told me that he was visiting the country and wanted to do a shoot with me I was super ecstatic. I remember a few years ago that I really liked this photo so much that I kept it as a peg for a shoot and it turned out that he did the hair and makeup for that shoot! I always look forward to working with people who have the same aesthetic as me. I did three shoots with him when he was in town and I will update you with the pictures soon. A few months ago, I met Vanessa on one of my shoots. I could not help but conceptualize when I saw her face. I am always drawn to faces that have so much character, faces that tell stories. I am so glad that Vanessa agreed to do the shoot with me even though the concept was a bit out of her character. Big thanks to my team! Eden for styling my shoot. No fashion photos today just self portraits taken by my phone in the kitchen. Haha Feel free to skip. ;)

I'm such a lazy blogger. For some reason I've always used this line in most of my entries. It's weird because I never really think of myself as a blogger. I hardly write anything interesting but I guess I always feel guilty when I'm not updating this blog because I promised(to myself) I would.

I've been waiting for this for weeks and it's finally here. I'm quite happy about the paper but the printing not so much. But overall it looks pretty decent. I actually can't stop looking at it. I don't know if it's just me but I always like seeing my work in print, big or small. It just feel so real.

I can't believe it's August already. I'm hoping things will finally fall into place.

Last week was just so busy. I did so many shoots and they were just so many deadlines and so many pictures to retouch. I kind of like it though. I'm always grateful for work! I always feel depressed when I'm inactive. ;_;

I just remembered that we will be leaving our current apartment and I have to say goodbye to my "studio" for now. I am actually worried that we may not able to find a space that fits my background and equipment. I really don't want to sell it. :(

I also found out that my 4 year old light was just in one of the boxes together with my 200+ magazine collection. I can't wait to get a new shelf and buy pretty art books. The only thing that I didn't find is my one and only film camera. ;_;

This entry is becoming too incoherent. I blame the meds and the lack of sleep. It's already 3 in the morning I shall rest.

I did another personal work, just us, we moved quietly and with music in the background it was just perfect. Shooting like this is so much more peaceful.

Hello Wednesday

These last few days I haven't been feeling good, so I've been lying in bed, reading blogs and just eating loads of ice cream and getting fatter by the minute.

I am almost done with my new personal work. It's so good to finally shoot pictures that I like after weeks of non-stop work. ♥ I still need pretty girls to shoot with and if possible prettier locations to shoot at. It seems the places that I know have already lost their magic.

I am also done with selections on my portfolio book which took me at least two months to choose the images alone. Because I'm fickle minded like that. Now to finish the last few pages and print it.

Here is a random self-portrait because people always told me I am so elusive. Haha And I think it's always good to know who writes this blog right?

When did your career start?

2005, I started taking pictures of friends and model friends around who are new in the business as well. I was always interested in fashion photography and creative photography right from the start. I also did gig photography. I shared some of my pictures on the internet and eventually started contributing to local publications.

What camera do you use?
I use a Canon 40d(after my Canon 350d was stolen) and 28-135 mm lens and prime lenses most of the time.

Do you have a studio?
No, before I used my room for shoots. After much saving up of funds I slowly bought my studio equipment. Started buying lights then backdrops, etc. I was also very fortunate that I got to borrow Mike's living room space for my shoots.

How would you describe your aesthetics in photography?
Dark, romantic and dreamy I guess. I am always experimenting when it comes to personal work since I have complete freedom over it. I think my style is always evolving but there are certain elements that will always remain the same. I am inspired by the Baroque, Renaissance era and certain films and I try to incorporate that into my work.

What is your current photography projects?
I am always planning personal shoots. I am currently working on a series. :)

Where do you get your models?

It depends on the shoot but some are from agencies, friends, social networking sites and some models contact me directly.

How much do you charge for a shoot?
This varies on the type of shoot I am doing. Kindly email me the details at info(at)hannahbacalla(dot)com

How long does it take you to edit your pictures?
It usually takes a lot of time for me to edit a photo, especially if it's a personal shoot. I take a lot of time in selecting the images, choosing the right tone for every photograph and of course, cleaning up the picture. It usually takes around 2-4 hours per picture. For work, I do the same thing but with a deadline in mind.

Do you support yourself with photography?
Yes, I do.

Advice for young photographers?
Experiment, I cannot stress this enough. Work with what you have, you don't necessarily have to own the latest and the best equipment for you to create something. What's important is your vision and how you execute it.

What turns you off?
Arrogance

Natural light or studio light?
I love both! When I was starting out I bought lights at the hardware store. I used all sorts of halogen lamps for me to practice on. Then I finally saved up for a Canon 430ex flash and started using it on my shoots. Then I moved to studio lights because I find it so much more convenient.

Do you use any actions?
I use actions that I made myself, but I rather keep away from relying on them too much.

What have you learned after all these years?
I learned to be more patient. To work very hard for my needs so that I can also shoot my personal projects.
You must be really prepared to sacrifice time and money to create images that you like and want.

Who are your favorite models?
Sun Fei Fei, Gemma Ward, Daul Kim, Emily Wake, Xiao Wen and Lily Cole are my super favorites.

It's almost been a month since I took these images of Dane. I am happy that we got to squeeze in a quick shoot before she left.

I don't know if I already mentioned this before but she's one of the subjects I can shoot with ease. No fuss and she's always so beautiful, in every angle.

It was just a brief shoot, we didn't even have a solid concept. I just really wanted to capture her true beauty.

Meet beautiful Martina, she's only 12 years old and she's already 5'7". She's even taller than me! One of the youngest models I got to shoot with. I always find it interesting when I am shooting fresh faces. They always seem to bring a new kind of energy and you can always learn from them.

After so long, I finally got to do another personal shoot. Yey~!

I dreamt about this a couple of months ago. The visuals were more "complex" than the images I took but some elements were physically impossible to achieve. At times like this, I wish I knew how to paint. -.-

Thank you to Nicky Roa for providing the wardrobe, which was perfect for my concept. It took me a while to find the perfect clothes for the shoot and when I saw his collection I knew right away that they would fit. And to Alex, whom I dragged to the beach for the shoot; Thank you for putting up with my demands. I remember a couple of years ago I asked her on the spot if we could cut her hair short and add a full-on fringe just because it would look better on the photographs, and surprisingly, she said yes. Oh, the things we do to get a good shot. Haha

I'll probably do more personal work in the coming months if time and budget permits. Hopefully, you'll like this.

PS: For those who are asking, the "effect" on the images isn't photoshopped. :)

Sort of an impromptu shoot.

Chai and I planned on doing a shoot for her makeup portfolio. But the model had to postpone due to unforeseen reasons and since I was already free I didn't want to waste the day. So, I asked her if she could model and do the makeup at the same time... and wow, she delivered!

I really hope to shoot more personal works this week. I have been dying to shoot this concept for the longest time. The amount of retouching work I am doing right now is insane. I wish I shoot more and retouch less but that's not always the case I guess.

A recent shoot I did for Detail Bydetails and Sepa Accessories.

I have been working on this shoot for quite some time now. While we were in the process of finalizing the clothes Gillian told me that she saw some of Sepa's new pieces that would look good for the shoot. I remembered the owner emailed me a few months ago about a shoot and when I went over to her site and saw the pieces my jaw immediately dropped, the pieces are that beautiful. Without hesitation I immediately emailed her and set up a meeting.

Big thanks to Gillian Uang for being so patient with my vision, Dianne Espera of Sepa Accessories, for being so nice and for believing in us, Chai Martinez for putting up with make up and hair demands and Bern for being so awesome on set. What a delight to work with these people.

Summer

I tried updating my blog yesterday but Blogger wasn't very cooperative and now I forgot what I was supposed to write.

Here's an obligatory summer post. I did an impromptu shoot with my cousins during our recent family trip in the mountains. I didn't get to take pictures of the place because I got allergies from the grass and heat. Also, I just bought one lens which isn't wide enough for landscape shots.

Summer isn't really for me. I like pretty sunsets and blue skies but the heat is just unbearable and I get allergies easily. It sucks that I can't enjoy it as much as you guys. But when it comes to shoots, that's a different story.

Poor kitty :(

Almost forgot to post this shot. Taken during my Femme shoot. I was really happy that I found the floral background a few hours before the shoot. I will probably use this again on future shoots. *dreams*

On a more techy note, I was approached by Ovi Nokia about turning my blog into an app which you can download over at the Ovi Store for free. I am still in the process of making this possible. Sadly, I cannot test my app because I don't have a Nokia phone. For those who have Ovi on their phones, if it's not too much to ask, please check it out when you can, test it out and let me know how it goes.

A long overdue shoot for Detail ByDetails. I had so much fun despite the heat.

Gillian and I have a certain mutual understanding when it comes to aesthetics, especially when it comes to models. We actually had the same pegs for the shoot. From the beginning we wanted the same thing---something beautiful and quirky.

I get asked a lot about my models. For those who do not know 80% of my models are not professionals and I really like how they transform in the images. Don't get me wrong, it's always awesome to shoot professional models(one of the reason why I always wanted to move out of the country because the type of model that I love is so hard to find here.) But there's a certain rawness when shooting non-professional models and it is always a creatively challenging experience that I love.

Here is another portfolio work that I shot recently. I had always wanted to do another "clean" look. I collaborated with Jamie(who lives next door) whom I shot last year and Chai, who's one of my favorite models but this time she worked behind the scenes as the makeup artist.

The last picture was sort of a spur-of-the-moment thing. We decided to take a shot with hair down and changed the lipstick to a more vibrant and glossy texture.

Singapore

I can't believe how much I suck at this. I always end up updating this blog with late news.

I was in Singapore a few weeks ago to meet some people. So my whole trip was me basically just running around the city going to meetings and eating Kaya toast and drinking coffee. I didn't take as much pictures as I wanted to. I didn't even get to bring my camera because it was too bulky to carry around.

And because I am feeling extra sluggish today I am going to blog in bullet form. Sorry :(

Had to change hotels because there was no internet connection and they didn't know when the internet was going to be back.

I'd get to visit Phunk Studio for a meeting. Got to see them at the last Graphika Manila and they're awesome. I never thought I get to visit their studio.

One night while looking for a place to eat, a man who thought he was a wizard kept on following us and he kept waving his "wand" like he was doing a spell. What a strange night that was.

Had the quickest shoot and I got to use a different camera which was awesome. *_*

I was on a Domo hunt (Don't ask.)

Familiar? These are from an old shoot I did with Dane last year. I was digging through old files and I found some photos that I really, really like. I will post more when I get back. I thought I'd add a little bit of color to this blog. It's weird how your perspective changes as time goes by.

I am going out of the country again for a few days. I'm still lost in a crossroad. I hope I figure things out soon. It's been really painful and exhausting. I hope this will be over soon.

I was in Singapore a few days ago. I am still practicing the habit of taking decent travel pictures and now all I have are phone pictures. /facepalm

It was raining the whole time and because of that I had to cancel some plans. Boo.

Arrived in Singapore tired and looking like a zombie. I was awake for more than 24 hours. Went out to grab late lunch at some Thai restaurant and then just walked around the city. Later that afternoon I went to 2902 Gallery and then went to visit Milk Photographie and then went back to the hotel to rest for a bit. I didn't get to take pictures because it was pouring and I was drenched. Got sick later that night. =_=

So here is another personal work.

I've always wanted to do something like this for the longest time but I never found the time nor the team for the shoot. When I finally had the time, budget and a friend who agreed to do the makeup, I immediately looked for a model. The wardrobe is by a friend designer, Josip Tumapa. The gown was a bit daring for the model so we decided to use a bodysuit.

Anyway, I had so much fun making the tiny set. I need more furniture and more space please! *daydreams* I might use this again for another personal shoot I am planning next year. :)

In other news, a few days ago I got a lovely piece from the talented Peter Chan! Thank you for this and thank you for liking my work. :3

I've been away from this blog far too long so I'm just going to do a quick post and I'll try not to get emotional. Haha

First of all, I just want to say THANK YOU for everything.
I'm forever grateful that I got to work with talented and wonderful people. I am very blessed for the support I have received. Thank you! :)

I just turned 22 a couple of days ago. I feel old.

It's the time of year when you think about your achievements, your failures, and the things you would do differently. The feeling of not doing enough, it's depressing but I guess everyone has to go through with it.

I've learned a lot these past few months. I'm more careful and I have reconsidered a lot of things when it comes to work. I have realized that I need more time and patience to achieve what I want to achieve and I need to sacrifice a lot of things to do what I want.

I'm not even sure how far I will go but all I know in the end all of these are going to be worth it. Just because I followed my heart, did what I wanted to do and live my life.

It's really good to know that at 22 I finally know what I want and what makes me happy. :)

A few days ago a model who happened to be in town asked me if I was interested in doing a test shoot. I am such a sucker for cheekbones and light eyes, I immediately said yes after looking at her pictures. Heehee

This may have been the quickest shoot I've ever done. We wrapped up in an hour!

I love how she can change her look in a matter of minutes and the fact that she's six feet tall(dream height!) *_*

Domz x What A Girl Wants

Let me do a quick post before I dive back into retouching. As much as I want to show you my new works, I'm just too busy with client work that I don't have time to work on personal projects. I'm sorry :( On top of that, the internet has been down for almost a week now and I can't do anything about it. How frustrating. -.-

A few weeks ago I did a shoot with the pretty Domz.

It was raining non-stop so I was left with the choice of either moving to a different location or cancelling the shoot. I had to do the shoot even if the time was very limited(I had to meet a client that afternoon).

I know it's a little bit feminine than my usual stuff but I really like doing shoots like this from time to time. Heehee :)

Yet another beauty shoot. I've been planning to do a beauty shoot for quite some time now. When a model asked me to do a shoot with her I instantly had this concept in mind. I talked to the makeup artist about this and he liked the idea. But the model rescheduled and then due to some unforeseen reasons, she eventually canceled the shoot. :(

Luckily, a few days after, Nicole's manager asked me to do a beauty shoot with her! I did a couple of looks but this is my favorite :)

I was also fortunate that a friend was in town to document my shoot. Thank you Martin Sitoy for the footage. Mike is still in the process of editing the video. But for now, here are some stills. :)

Just some behind the scenes

On an unrelated note, how do you feel when other artists use a part of your work and call it as their own without your consent? Does it hurt that much to give credit where it's due?

I wish some people would inform the photographer first before they use the photos. It is only polite to ask permission from the owner even if the artwork is for personal use. Using it for commercial purposes is a different story.

My work is not stock photography.

I did an impromptu shoot with Gillian last week because one of my shoots got cancelled and I needed a break from all of the stressful stuff that I'm dealing with. I'm so thankful that Gillian was available and was ready to shoot! :)

I wasn't able to take behind the scenes pictures(Come to think of it I hardly take BTS pictures. I usually steal them from people who are present on set, muahaha!) because I was busy talking and shooting

To make it up to you here's a little something to show you guys how I plan my shoots.

I absolutely love making mood boards. My mind is a crazy place and I need it to organize concepts and small details especially when I'm planning three or more shoots in a week. I usually write it down in my organizer but I keep on forgetting where I put it and I really, really, really hate the feel of certain paper textures. :(

Here's my mood board for this shoot. (Don't laugh! I know it ain't the prettiest thing in the world but it makes things less stressful. And I think this is more organize than my previous boards. Haha)

I seriously need to rest, my back hurts like hell and it's been like this since last week and it's more painful now.
